Cycling Routes

Shiretoko Pass Cycling

The Shiretoko Crossing Road (Route 334) stretches 27 km from Utoro to Rausu, winding across the peninsula with dramatic elevation changes. It’s a challenging route popular among experienced cyclists.

Starting from Utoro, you’ll face a steady uphill ride to the 738-meter-high Shiretoko Pass. Stop at the Puyuni Cape viewpoint for sweeping views of the Sea of Okhotsk and the town below. From the pass, it’s a fast descent into the dense dwarf pine forests on the Rausu side—a thrilling and scenic ride.

This road is open seasonally from late May to late October. It’s closed in winter due to snow. Weather can change quickly, so bring warm clothing and snacks. Since this is also bear habitat, carry a bell and bear spray for safety.

Nakashibetsu Milk Road Cycling Route

The Nakashibetsu Milk Road is a scenic 5.1 km cycling route that cuts through the rolling pastures of dairy country in Eastern Hokkaido. Cows graze freely on either side of the straight hilltop road, with hay bales dotting the fields—a classic Hokkaido landscape.

Near the end of the route, you’ll reach Kaiyodai Lookout, where, on a clear day, you can enjoy a sweeping 330° view of the horizon, including nearby mountain ranges and the Notsuke Peninsula.

Cycling the North Pacific Seaside Line

The area surrounding Kiritappu Wetland is perfect for scenic cycling. One of the most rewarding routes is the North Pacific Seaside Line (Route 123), which runs from Hamanaka to Akkeshi. Along this coastal road, you’ll pass wetlands protected by local conservation efforts, small fishing villages, dramatic cliffs like Cape Namida, and habitats teeming with birds and wildflowers.

This route offers a unique blend of ocean views, wetlands, and rural Hokkaido landscapes that shift with the seasons.

Cycling the Notsuke Peninsula

The Notsuke Peninsula is a 26 km sand spit where you ride with the sea stretching out on both sides. On clear days, views open toward Kunashiri Island and the Shiretoko mountains. Keep an eye out for Ezo deer and coastal birds along the way, and observe wildlife from a respectful distance.

Tip: Pair your ride with the Betsukai Seal Watching Cruise to experience the peninsula from the water — bicycles can be brought onboard, allowing you to continue cycling after the cruise.

Note: The boardwalk toward Todowara is for pedestrians only. Please dismount and walk your bike.

Cycling in Abashiri

Abashiri offers scenic cycling routes through farmlands and hills with views of Mt. Shari, Lake Tofutsu, and the Sea of Okhotsk. One popular trail is the Kando no michi (Path of Emotion) , which winds through the countryside. For those looking for a longer ride, a 40-km course takes you around Lake Notoro and Cape Notoro.
