5-Day Wildlife & Outdoor Adventure

Discover the wild heart of Eastern Hokkaido. This 5-day journey takes you through stunning national parks, wildlife-rich wetlands, and rugged coastlines. Perfect for nature lovers seeking encounters with iconic animals such as red-crowned cranes, Ezo deer, and brown bears, alongside hiking and outdoor activities.

Day 1: Kushiro Arrival & Wetlands

Arrive in Kushiro, stroll through the Kushiro Marsh Observatory and enjoy panoramic views of Japan’s largest wetland. End the day with a seafood dinner at Kushiro Fisherman’s Wharf.

Day 2: Red-Crowned Cranes & Akan-Mashu National Park

Join a guided tour to observe the iconic red-crowned cranes in their natural habitat. Continue to Lake Mashu, known as one of the clearest lakes in the world, and overnight near Lake Akan.

Day 3: Lake Akan & Outdoor Activities

Canoe across Lake Akan at sunrise or hike around Mount Oakan. Visit an Ainu Kotan village to learn about the indigenous culture. Relax in a lakeside hot spring in the evening.

Day 4: Shiretoko Peninsula

Drive to Shiretoko (UNESCO site) and board a wildlife cruise to spot brown bears, dolphins, orcas, and sea eagles. Hike through primeval forests to the Shiretoko Five Lakes.

Day 5: Nature Encounters & Departure

Depending on the season, experience a drift ice walk (winter) or birdwatching around the peninsula. Return to Kushiro for departure.


7-Day Road Trip Across Eastern Hokkaido

Experience the freedom of the open road on this 7-day self-drive adventure. From flower fields and hot springs to dramatic lakes and remote coastal towns, this itinerary showcases the diverse landscapes and hidden gems of Eastern Hokkaido. A perfect blend of scenic drives, cultural stops, and local flavors.

Day 1: Kushiro Wetlands & City Walk

Arrive in Kushiro and explore the wetlands via boardwalks. In the evening, enjoy a local specialty, charcoal-grilled robatayaki seafood.

Day 2: Lake Akan & Volcanic Landscapes

Drive to Lake Akan, hike around the volcanic Mount Meakan, and see the unique Marimo algae. Overnight in an onsen ryokan.

Day 3: Abashiri & Drift Ice

Head north to Abashiri. Visit the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum and, in winter, board an icebreaker cruise. Enjoy fresh crab at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Shiretoko Peninsula Adventure

Explore Shiretoko with a guided trekking tour. Visit the Shiretoko Five Lakes and take in views of waterfalls flowing directly into the sea.

Day 5: Lake Mashu & Kawayu Onsen

Marvel at the crystal-clear Lake Mashu and soak in the sulfur hot springs of Kawayu Onsen, known for its therapeutic waters.

Day 6: Nemuro & Cape Nosappu

Drive east to Nemuro, Japan’s easternmost city. Visit Cape Nosappu for a sunrise view and taste fresh sanma (Pacific saury).

Day 7: Return to Kushiro

Stop at local roadside stations for souvenirs. Spend the afternoon shopping in Kushiro before heading to the airport.
